Sean Hayes Returns to Broadway in ‘An Act of God’

Sean Hayes is stepping back into the robes of the Almighty for the second coming.

After playing the title role in Los Angeles and San Francisco, the actor will reprise his performance this summer in a return Broadway engagement of David Javerbaum’s comedy, An Act of God.

The limited 14-week run will begin previews on May 28 at the Booth Theatre, with an official opening on June 6 and a Sept. 4 closing date.

Being an intimate house in the heart of the Theater District, the Booth is considered prime real estate on Broadway. It became available when the recent revival of Eugene O’Neill’s Hughie, starring Forest Whitaker, folded more than two months ahead of its originally scheduled June 12 closing date due to slow ticket sales.

'An Act of God': Theater Review

Essentially a one-deity show, An Act of God features the creator flanked by two angels as he answers questions that have plagued mankind for millennia and updates the Ten Commandments. The play was adapted by Javerbaum, a 13-time Emmy winner for his work as head writer and executive producer on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, from his book of the same name.

The show is produced by Jeffrey Finn and directed by Joe Mantello, currently represented on Broadway with The Humans, Blackbird and the long-running musical blockbuster, Wicked.

The first production to open in the 2015-16 season, An Act of God ran May 7 through Aug. 2 last year, and starred Jim Parsons in the title role. The show was a brisk seller, grossing just over $11 million and turning a profit in its limited 12-week run at Studio 54.

Best known for his Emmy-winning role on NBC’s Will & Grace, Hayes made his Broadway debut starring opposite Kristin Chenoweth in the 2010 revival of Promises, Promises, which earned him a Tony nomination for best actor in a musical.
