When Sean Hayes stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday, he revealed that he was originally scheduled to appear on the talk show two weeks earlier. After experiencing excruciating pain, Hayes went to the hospital. “I had a very rare thing where my small intestine burst open,” he revealed. “It was poisoning my body.”
“They went in there and they clipped off the bad part and put it back together with like, a chip clip,” Hayes said, while attempting to explain the procedure. He then joked, “So now my potato chips are stale.”
Although he was hospitalized and highly medicated, Hayes was convinced that he could still make it to the taping of The Ellen DeGeneres Show he was originally scheduled to appear on. After speaking with a producer from the show, Hayes’ husband, Scott Icenogle, tried to talk some sense into the actor. “Scottie, my husband, was in the room with me,” he said. “I hung up the phone and he was like, ‘What’s wrong with you? You can’t do the Ellen show on Monday. Are you high?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m really high. Are you high?’”
DeGeneres shared an image of Hayes in a hospital gown following the procedure. Hayes revealed that while he took a walk around the hospital, he noticed many laughing nurses and assumed that they were fans. He then announced the real reason behind the nurses’ laughter. “My bottom was sticking out the whole time,” he recalled.
Before closing the segment, Hayes surprised DeGeneres with an incentive spirometer, which is an instrument used in hospitals to help patients strengthen their lungs. Because both Hayes and DeGeneres love games, the Will & Grace star wanted to use the instrument in an alternative way. The guest explained, “Whoever can suck their balls the hardest wins.”
Before the game began, DeGeneres questioned, “You suck, not blow?” Hayes then joked, “Of course I’d have to teach her!”
Following the game, Hayes consoled his competitor. “It doesn’t matter who won the game,” he said. “The important thing is we both suck.”
