Emma Thompson as Katherine Newbury in 'Late Night'

The comedy, which was written by and stars Mindy Kaling, follows Letterman-esque talk show host Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson) whose world is turned upside down when she hires her first female staff writer (Kaling) in an attempt to address diversity concerns and to save the show.
John Lithgow, Hugh Dancy, Reid Scott, Paul Walter Hauser and Amy Ryan also star in the film, which was directed by Nisha Ganatra. Kaling, Howard Klein, Jillian Apfelbaum and Ben Browning produced.
The latest trailer opens with Katherine preparing to begin a taping of her late-night show as an announcer shares her career accomplishments, which includes 43 Emmys.
Katherine soon learns that she needs to diversify her writing staff after a reporter points out that her team consists of all white men. After she tells a co-worker that the team needs to hire a woman, she’s asked if a gay male employee would work.
Kaling’s Molly is soon hired to join the team as its new writer despite her lack of experience in comedy. “I’m so happy I feel sick,” she declares after she secures the job.

Katherine faces yet another obstacle when another colleague (Ryan) informs her that the current season of the late-night show will be its last. “Think about why the show is bad and come up with ways to fix it,” Katherine tells her staff as they scramble to save the show from cancellation.
“I will not be marginalized because no one here looks like me,” Molly later says, after she doesn’t receive a warm welcome from her new co-workers.
The latest trailer also gives insight into Katherine’s personal life and includes a conversation with her husband, Walter (Lithgow). After he tells her that the show hasn’t been good in years, she asks why he never told her. “I thought you knew and didn’t care,” he admits.
Katherine and Molly eventually team up in an effort to get the show renewed. The new writer helps the host create more modern jokes, as well as informs her of what she is doing wrong. “You’re a little old and a little white,” Molly tells her boss. The comment leads the two to create a new segment for the show called “White Savior,” in which Katherine hails cabs for pedestrians.
The trailer concludes with Katherine and Molly speaking to the press. When Katherine is asked to describe Molly, she struggles to find words to describe the writer. Molly cuts in and says, “She said that I reminder her of a younger her.”
