Selena Gomez has revealed that she had a kidney transplant this summer and posted a photo of herself recovering.
On Thursday, Gomez posted pictures of her donor, close friend Francia Raisa, holding hands in adjacent hospital beds while recovering post surgery.
“I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed i was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of,” said Gomez in her Instagram post to her 126 million followers worldwide. “So I found out I need to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health.”
Gomez underwent surgery because of complications and side effects related to her Lupus. The autoimmune disease reportedly so damaged the singer’s organs that she was told by doctors that she required a transplant.
In her post, Gomez called on her fans to find out more about Lupus by going to the Lupus Research Alliance website on www.lupusresearch.org.
Gomez first revealed in 2015 that she had been diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder.
Gomez, it was recently announced, will star alongside Kelly Rohrbach, Elle Fanning and Liev Schreiber in Woody Allen’s next film.
