Selena Gomez may first have come onto the scene as a cute kid on Barney & Friends, but she certainly has grown up — and her style has definitely evolved. On the cover of Billboard, the singer and friend of Taylor Swift looks chicer than ever in a boyfriend-style white-and-black tuxedo.
Styled by Christian Classen, who’s part of Kate Young‘s team, Gomez is sophisticated and cool wearing a Maison Martin Margiela ensemble, accessorized with Jennifer Fisher jewels including a metallic choker and several silver rings.
The star, who revealed to Billboard that she suffered from lupus, also seems to be embracing the minimal-makeup trend that slowly is seeping from catwalks to magazine covers. WWD profiled the 23-year-old singer whose fifth album drops Friday, taking a look at her new look, which features much more monochromatic dressing and labels like Elie Saab, Edun and Preen.
Said Gomez, “The older that I’ve become, I’ve felt very connected to fashion, especially this past year working with [stylist] Kate Young and creating these relationships with people that I never had before.” She added, “If I could sum up my look in one word, I would hope that it would be sophisticated.”
It seems the road to sophistication hasn’t been totally seamless, though. “When I see something on the rack or on the model, I’ll literally say like, ‘No. That is not something I will wear,’ ” said Gomez. Young will “just hold it and sit there until I put it on. I like that — it’s like a trainer, in a way. When you’re working out, you want someone to push you and motivate you to get out of your box and comfort zone.” As with a great trainer, the results are well worth it.
