The premiere episode of Serial season two was released on Thursday morning to the delight of many fans of the popular podcast. The first episode of the new season is entitled “Dustwun.”
“Our first season was about a murder case few people had heard about,” writes host Sarah Koenig in an email sent out to Serial fans. She is referring to the now-famous case of Adnan Syed, who was convicted for killing his high school ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999. “Season Two is a story a gazillion people have heard about: the story of Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. soldier who walked off his post in Afghanistan in 2009 and was captured and held by the Taliban for nearly five years.”
Bergdahl’s case is still active in military court and Koenig reports that on Thursday the House Armed Services Committee will release a report on the Bergdahl trade. The Serial host said Bergdahl is unlike anyone she’s ever encountered and promises the story is not only about the “strange decision he made to leave his post” but it’s also about the people who were affected by that decision and their choices.
The introduction was released on Facebook, as part of a new social media strategy where the Serial team plans to interact with fans on Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
In the intro, Koenig describes the video of the U.S. getting Bergdahl back from the Taliban. There are clips of newscasters asking whether Bergdahl is a hero or deserter and saying that some parents of fallen soldiers blame Bergdahl for their children’s deaths, saying they would be alive if he had not gone missing from his post. There’s a clip of Donald Trump saying, “In the old days deserters were shot, right?”
