Ten years in the making, Sausage Party had its Los Angeles premiere on Tuesday.
Seth Rogen and producing partner Evan Goldberg first hatched the idea of the film after wondering why there had been a lack of animation movies for adults. Rogen pitched the idea to Sausage Party co-director Conrad Vernon while working on Monsters vs. Aliens.
“For a long time I’ve seen a lot of animation just be for a very specific audience. We don’t make movies for that audience. We want to make a movie for our audience and it’s inevitably going to be rated R,” Vernon recalled.
“It’s overwhelming this exists,” said Rogen. “We’ve been working on this a really long time, and it will be a weird adjustment not working on Sausage Party anymore because a lot of my life I have been working on Sausage Party.”
Before the movie was shown, Rogen gave a short speech to thank all those who helped make his and Goldberg’s film come to life: “This movie is a little different than any other movie we worked on before and we’ve been working on it for such a long time. It’s been a real labor of love for us.”
Sausage Party opens Friday nationwide.
