The $5.4 billion Shanghai Disney Resort doesn’t open until the end of 2015, but it now has a veteran leader. On Friday, Disney appointed Philippe Gas, who was president of Euro Disney, to oversee its next mega park.
Disney also announced that Tom Wolber will take over as president of Euro Disney S.A.S., the management company that operates Disneyland Paris.
“One of our greatest assets is the global strength of our teams,” said Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “Both Philippe and Tom are seasoned Disney veterans with a tremendous combination of leadership skills, business acumen and international experience that will help ensure that we carry on our legacy of creating unforgettable experiences for our guests. They bring an incredible depth of operational experience to their respective roles.”
Gas, who has been with Disney for more than 20 years, is no stranger to Asia. He managed human resources and strategy for company operations in 13 Asian countries.
As president of Euro Disney S.A.S., Gas helped turn around Disneyland Paris, making it once again a popular tourism attraction in Europe.
Wolber, who helped open Disneyland Paris in 1992, has been head of Walt Disney World Resort and Transportation Operations in Orlando, Fla. He most recently was involved with the Disney Cruise Line and Disney Vacation Club.
Shanghai Disney Resort, the most ambitious and expensive new theme park in the company’s history, is a joint venture with the Chinese government and is located in Pudong, Shanghai, China. Spread over 963 acres, it will include two hotels, eating and shopping venues, a lake and recreational facilities, in addition to the theme park.
Gas and Wolber start their new positions in September.
