TNT NBA analyst Shaquille O’Neal has already appeared opposite Tiger Woods in the popular “Duel of the Masters” viral video. Now, it looks like O’Neal will be joining Woods in the new golf game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Electronic Arts is enlisting sports celebrities to help attract a wider audience for its 15th Tiger Woods golf simulation. EA Sports has already announced that Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, former NHL All-Star Jeremy Roenick, former boxing champion Sugar Ray Leonard, and former NFL Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk will be playable in the new game for anyone who pre-orders Tiger Woods PGA TOUR Golf 13 from Amazon.com.
O’Neal, who starred in his own EA videogame, Shaq Fu, back in the ‘90s, appears to be going virtual again. The outspoken TNT NBA analyst talks about kung fu fighting with Woods and why he only plays 2K Sports’ NBA 2K12 in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
The Hollywood Reporter: What was it like working with Tiger Woods on the “Duel of the Masters” viral video?
Shaquille O’Neal: It was fun I’ve known Tiger for a while. It was nice to see him and film that.
THR: Tiger Woods said a TV was broken during the shoot.
Shaq: Yes it did. I tried to do a move and it had a little spin on it and it swiped the TV.
THR: Did you two get a chance to play any video games after the shoot?
Shaq: No. The only game I play is the NBA game. I don’t play any other games. I tried to play the war games but I don’t like to read instructions, so I don’t play those.
THR: What are your thoughts on what game developers can do with today’s NBA games?
Shaq: They’re beautiful. They look almost like the real thing. I wish they had that technology when I was coming up.
THR: I heard you might be one of the celebrities in the new Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 13 game coming out March 27th for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Shaq: I don’t know what you’re talking about. (Laughs.)
THR: Did you do any motion-capture or any work on the game?
Shaq: I didn’t do anything for it. I think I’m going to be in the game, but I’m not sure. I’m always looking forward to a lot of stuff like that so I don’t know.
THR: How did your Electronic Arts game Shaq Fu come about back in the ‘90s?
Shaq: That was made when they said why don’t we do a whole game around you and I said that if we do that I wanted to be inside a game. And they ended up doing the rock star thing and that became the Shaq Fu game.
THR: What do you think of how far games have come since you did Shaq Fu?
Shaq: It’s phenomenal, hats off to the programmers and all the kids making this stuff up and hats off to the rock stars who are pushing the envelope even a little more with new games. There are all types of games out there today for everyone from juveniles to juvenile delinquents.
