Sharknado fever still is going strong.
After hitting ratings highs after the third broadcast, Syfy’s shark apocalypse TV movie soon will be taking over retail stores nationwide as the network and movie’s producer have made a deal with retail and brand licensing agency Earthbound to sell official Sharknado merchandise.
That includes potential items such as T-shirts, bags, posters, accessories and even costumes — just in time for Halloween — as well as products in areas like gaming, among others. The first merchandise, Sharknado T-shirts, will hit national retail stores in the coming weeks.
“The public’s appetite for the incredible Sharknado franchise has been remarkable,” said Jeff Li, vp at Syfy Ventures. “The bold and over-the-top Sharknado brand is the perfect fit for a wide range of fun merchandise, providing partners with the unique opportunity to drive consumer excitement and retail sales.”
Added Paul Bales, partner at The Asylum, producer of Sharknado, “We’re excited to be working with Earthbound and Syfy and to see Sharknado on every T-shirt, umbrella and chainsaw in America.”
Syfy already is at work on a Sharknado sequel, which will move the story to New York City and debut on the cable network in July 2014. Although casting has not begun on the sequel, Sharknado producer David Latt told The Hollywood Reporter that the original cast — including Ian Ziering, Tara Reid and Cassie Scerbo — is welcome back.
Sharknado also will have a midnight screening in theaters Aug. 2.
