Shia LaBeouf Charged Following Broadway Arrest

Police officers handcuffed and escorted Shia LaBeouf out of a Broadway performance of Cabaret Thursday night.

“He has been detained and charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespass,” an NYPD spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.

“The incident occurred at Studio 54 during Cabaret at around 9 p.m [ET]. He was acting disorderly, yelling and being loud, and is currently being held at the Midtown North police station,” said the police. “He will be taken to jail tonight and will then have to appear in court.”

The NYPD said Friday morning that LaBeouf was found to be causing a disturbance and making threats. LaBeouf was arraigned Friday morning in Manhattan Community Court, where bail was set at $2,500 but he was released on his own recognizance. His next court date is July 24.

Broadway songwriter Benj Pasek tweeted Thursday night that he saw LaBeouf “in handcuffs in tears surrounded by 6 police officers outside of CABARET the musical.” Cabaret star Alan Cumming also tweeted about the incident Friday morning, with several witnesses inside the theater telling the Associated Press how they saw LaBeouf behaving (video embedded below).

According to the criminal complaint, obtained by THR Friday morning, a security guard at Studio 54 saw LaBeouf stand up in the middle of theatrical performance and yell at the actors onstage, with many people in the audience of more than 100 people turning to look at LaBeouf as he disturbed the production. The security guard then asked LaBeouf to leave the theater but he refused to go. As LaBeouf was escorted out of Studio 54, he screamed at the arresting police officer, “F— you. This is f—ing bullshit. Do you know my life? Do you know who the f— I am? Do you know who I am?” During arrest processing, LaBeouf spat at the cop’s feet, according to the arresting officer.

One of the audience members at Cabaret, Katie Glantz, who tweeted about seeing the show Thursday night, told THR what she observed. Glantz was sitting in the mezzanine, so she says she “didn’t really see anything, I just heard shouting and bottles being thrown!”

As for how the actors dealt with LaBeouf’s behavior, Glantz says they didn’t seem annoyed.

“They remained in character and were pretty professional,” she says.

A rep for LaBeouf did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The actor made headlines early this year for a series of strange incidents — including a skywriting apology, declaring his retirement from public life, and showing up at a red carpet event with a paper bag on his head. He also embarked on an #IAmSorry performance art piece, in which the actor sat silently in a room and allowed people to join him.

LaBeouf’s latest incident came on the eve of the release of Transformers: Age of Extinction, the first in the Michael Bay robot series not to star the actor.
