During the In Memoriam segment of the 60th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night, K-pop fans noticed that the late SHINee star Jonghyun was excluded from the montage that pays tribute to numerous artists and industry personnel who passed away over the past year. Immediately following the segment, fans took to Twitter to express their frustration.
“the grammys couldn’t even take one moment to honor jonghyun during the in memoriam.. really gross and pathetic of them,” one user tweeted, while another stated they were “disappointed” in the Grammys for not including Jonghyun, who died from suicide, “especially considering the performance that followed,” that of Logic’s “1-800-273-8255,” which deals with mental illness and suicide.
According to Grammys executive producer Ken Ehrlich, “Out of the hundreds of artists and industry professionals who may have passed away, only about 50 can make it into the montage itself — and each can only be displayed onscreen for a few seconds. Who makes it in is decided by a committee of about 12 or 13 people from the Recording Academy, just one more way that the ceremony tries to make the system democratic and objective — and driven primarily by musical influence.”
The official Grammy website does list Jonghyun on its In Memoriam page, but fans were still bothered that the singer was not featured among the likes of Chuck Berry, David Cassidy, Dolores O’Riordan, Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington during this year’s ceremony — especially considering his significance in the K-pop world.
Take a look at some of the Twitter backlash, below.

We should talk about the disrespect from the Grammys for not adding Jonghyun in the In Memoriam list.
