PARIS – Simon Cowell will take center stage at October’s MIPCOM. He won’t face a panel of judges, but the host and producer will receive the television industry confab’s Personality of the Year award.
Cowell will give a keynote at the Palais des Festivals on Oct. 13, and will receive the award in a special ceremony the next evening at the Carlton Hotel.
The prolific producer — and former American Idol and X-Factor judge — will be recognized for the way his programs changed popular music and television culture.
“Simon Cowell is a visionary producer whose television franchises are on air in almost 200 territories around the world, underlining his status as a global creative icon,” said conference producer Reed MIDEM CEO Paul Zilk. “In recognition of his amazing career as a creator of international formats and his formidable impact on the entertainment industry as a whole, we are honored to welcome him.”
American Idol reintroduced the talent and competition show to audiences more than a decade ago, and transformed the formats business in television with Cowell as a hard-to-impress judge.
His Syco Entertainment production company now produces the global X-Factors and Got Talent format franchises. The Got Talent format has now been produced in 62 territories, and the X-Factor format in 49.
Cowell also produced his first feature film last year, the behind-the-scenes look at boy-band superstars One Direction in their This Is Us documentary hit.
He follows Disney-ABC President Anne Sweeney and DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg in receiving the title.
MIPCOM will run Oct. 13-16 in Cannes.
