Italians have proven there’s an audience for showcasing their national treasures on the silver screen. Sky continues their winning content streak with The Vatican Museums 3D, which premiered for one day this month, taking in $312K across 150 theaters, beating out all blockbuster titles that day. It was so successful that cinemas asked to schedule it again for the following weekend.
“In 1506 During the pontificate of Julius II a farmer discovered a statue,” states the trailer with a backdrop of music. “So began the greatest art collection in history.” The film explores the many layers of famous works by Giotto, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio and more.
Nexo Digital is launching a world tour of events for The Vatican Museums 3D. Up next is in the UK and Ireland on Tuesday. It premieres in the U.S. on Dec. 10. The Vatican Museums remain one of Italy’s top tourist attractions.
