Snapchat has tapped a television veteran to boost its original content ambitions.
The Venice-based messaging app has tapped Marcus Wiley as head of program planning and development, giving him oversight of original series produced for Snapchat’s Discover channel, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Wiley previously served as co-senior vp comedy development at Fox, where he oversaw projects including Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Mindy Project. He left the network to transition into producing in 2013.
At Snapchat, Wiley will influence the editorial voice of the Snap Channel, the startup’s branded channel within its Discover media platform, which also features channels from ESPN, CNN, Yahoo and Vice. Since Discover launched in January, the Snap Channel has featured original comedy series Literally Can’t Even, talk show Pillow Talk, music discovery segment Under the Ghost, comedy news segments and more — all of which refresh after 24 hours.
Evan Spiegel founded Snapchat in 2011 as a place to send disappearing photo messages. The app has since grown to encompass video and text messages and media, and today it reaches more than 100 million users who view more than 2 billion videos a day.
