Can a star’s social media engagement help boost their film’s box office presence? According to numbers tracked by MVPindex, celebrity-backed promotions on social platforms can help generate billions of impressions and fan engagements before a film hits theaters.
MVPindex compared social media posts by notable names with ties to three of this summer’s biggest animated films — Ellen DeGeneres (Finding Dory), Demi Lovato (The Angry Birds Movie) and Shakira (Zootopia) — to see which influencers made the most impact on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
View the ranking below.
1. Ellen DeGeneres, Finding Dory
DeGeneres, who voices Dory in Finding Nemo and spinoff film Finding Dory, is the No. 1 influencer in terms of social engagement and impressions across all of her social media channels. The talk show host promoted the movie ahead of its release in 50 total tweets and posts on Facebook and Instagram amassed 1.9 billion impressions and 9.6 millions likes, comments and shares. This year, the film has garnered 3.29 billion impressions across 1,470 posts from viewers and fans. Finding Dory also made box office history when it earned $136.2 million from 4,305 theaters, the biggest domestic opening ever for an animated film.
2. Shakira, Zootopia
The Colombian singer, who voices Zootopia’s resident pop star Gazelle and the lead song, “Try Everything,” off of the film’s soundtrack, is ranked the second top social influencer who has helped generate billions of impressions for the summer box office hit, according to MVPindex. Shakira mentioned the film on her social media accounts in a total of 153 posts, all of which garnered 7.5 million engagements by fans. Zootopia, in total, earned 1.4 billions impressions over 1,532 different posts.
3. Demi Lovato, The Angry Birds Movie
Lovato, who — along with Blake Shelton, Charli XCX and Imagine Dragons — lends her vocals to the film’s soundtrack, posted about the movie 10 times across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and received 1.7 million engagements in the form of comments, likes and shares and more than 324 million total impressions for Angry Birds.
