Following President Donald Trump’s announcement that he will not be attending the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 29, users on social media began suggesting actor Alec Baldwin take his place at the event.
Trump would be the first president to skip the dinner since Ronald Reagan in 1981, who missed the event because he was recovering from an assassination attempt less than a month before, but even then he was still able to deliver remarks to the event via telephone.
Baldwin’s impression of Trump has been a staple of Saturday Night Live since before the election, and the popularity of the actor’s impersonation had stars like Zach Braff and Diane Warren calling for Baldwin to attend in the absent president’s place — in character.

Hey @whca, since @realDonaldTrump has announced that he’s not attending, it only makes sense that @AlecBaldwin deliver the keynote. #WHCA
