Sofia Coppola will no longer direct Universal and Working Titles’ The Little Mermaid movie due to creative differences.
Caroline Thompson wrote the script for the live-action fairytale adaptation, which centers on a mermaid who gives up her life in the sea after she falls in love with a prince.

Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing the project. Sources say casting was underway for the film, with Coppola meeting with Bevan and Fellner recently in London. The studio is still very keen to move forward with the project and keep it on track.
Coppola, who helmed The Bling Ring and Somewhere, does not have a next project lined up yet, but she did recently finish work on her Netflix Christmas movie starring Bill Murray.
