Son of Saul was named best international film at the 31st Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday.
The film beat out A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence, Embrace of the Serpent, Girlhood and Mustang to win the award.
Director Laszlo Nemes accepted the trophy, expressing his thanks to his crew and cast. “It means a lot to us that the language of film — the grammar of film — is not something that stopped evolving, and we want to explore. I think it’s an encouragement,” he said.
The awards were handed out in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica during a ceremony hosted by Silicon Valley’s Kumail Nanjiani and Saturday Night Live’s Kate McKinnon.
