NEW YORK – Sony Corp. said it doesn’t plan on unveiling a new console at June’s E3 video game trade show, shooting down expectations that it could soon launch a successor to its PlayStation 3 device, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Kaz Hirai, who oversees Sony’s video game and consumer electronics units, said during a roundtable discussion with reporters at the Consumer Electronics Show, that the conglomerate always viewed the current device, which launched in 2006, as having a 10-year life cycle, it said. ?
Sony also highlighted that the PS3 consistently ranks as the top video game console in 100 countries and continues to sell well all around the globe.
The conglomerate has been preparing to expand sales of the new PlayStation Vita handheld game device beyond its initial release in Asia last month. It is set for its U.S. launch on Feb 22. Sony said Asian sales so far have topped 500,000 units, exceeding its expectations, according to the Journal.
