Dracula Untold debuted in the second place at the South Korean box office over the weekend, earning a total of $4.17 million for the Oct. 8-12 period.
The Hollywood action film accounted for 19.6 percent of the market share for the weekend — an impressive performance given the dominance of homegrown pics in Korea in recent years. So far this year, Korean films have taken 50.7 percent of the country’s total box office, while Hollywood imports account for a market share of 45.1 percent.
The local rom-com My Love, My Bride topped the Korean chart with 27 percent of box-office revenue. It has earned a cumulative $5.7 million since opening on Oct. 8. The film is a rare remake of an older Korean film (1990 title of the same name) in the local industry, where directors have traditionally been expected to pen their own scripts. Handled by Cineguru/Daou Tech and directed by Lim Charn-sang, the film stars popular actors Synn Min Ah (Gyeongju) and Jo Jung-suk (The Face Reader) as a newlywed couple going through the ups and downs of marriage.
Local films that opened the previous week changed their positions, with thriller Whistle Blower (M-Line Distribution) dropping to third place from first and dramedy Slow Video (also M-Line) moving to fourth from second. Erotic thriller Scarlet Innocence (CJ Entertainment) finished ninth after debuting in fifth place.
Two Hollywood imports from the previous week also maintained their positions among the top 10 films, with Fox’s The Maze Runner finishing fifth (cumulative gross $17.6 million) and New Line Cinema’s horror pic Annabelle coming in sixth (gross total $5.25 million).
Begin Again (Pancinema), the music drama starring Keira Knightly, continued to perform strongly in its most successful market, ranking seventh with a cumulative $23.97 million.
