Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar debuted at No. 1 at the South Korean box office over the weekend of Nov. 7-9, grossing a total of $14.1 million since opening at midnight on Nov. 5. This makes Korea the most successful market for the sci-fi film outside the U.S., before it hits other parts of Asia, including China and Japan.
The film, handled by Warner Brothers Korea, accounted for 41.1 percent of the weekend box office, with 3D and Imax versions contributing to sales.
In spite of its long running time, the film brought in an impressive 1.9 million admissions in just four days. Korean offices use admissions as their primary measure.
Ranking second was the local teen comedy Fashion King (Next Entertainment World), which made its market premiere at the Asian Film Market. The film, based on the popular “webtoon” (web comic strips) of the same name, earned $2.27 million or 17.9 percent of ticket sales and has presold to a number of Asian territories, including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau.
Gone Girl (Twentieth Century Fox Korea), maintaining the No. 2 spot during the two previous weeks, stepped down to third. It has reaped $11.1 million so far since opening on Oct. 23.
Next up were the homespun comedy dramas We Are Brothers (Cineguru/Daou Tech) in fourth and My Dictator (Lotte Entertainment) in fifth. The latter — about a man who must care for his delusional former actor father who believes he is the late North Korean leader Kim Il Sung (Kim Jong Un‘s grandfather) — had debuted on top of the box office last week.
