The Truth Shall Not Sink With Sewol Still - H 2014
Courtesy of Cinema DalThursday marked the first anniversary of a tragic ferry disaster that shocked South Korea, and stars near and far—including the cast of Avengers: Age of Ultron, who were in town to promote their film—have made a nod, albeit rather discreetly.
Collective shock and grief had swept the nation when the Sewol Ferry sank off the southwest coast of Korea, claiming 304 lives including mostly high school students. As time passed, however, the highly politicized incident began to stir anger and frustration among Koreans, as the disaster has been blamed in part on incompetence and corruption. The ship itself also has yet to be salvaged.
Nevertheless, many Koreans, including stars, expressed their condolences.
Top actress Song Hye-kyo (John Woo‘s 3D serial epic The Crossing) appeared wearing a yellow ribbon — a symbol of deference — during a promotional event for Chinese rom-com The Queens in Beijing on Wednesday. Actress Ha Ji-won was also spotted sporting a ribbon when she arrived at the Incheon International Airport on Thursday.

The same day, the cast of Avengers: Age of Ultron also landed in Seoul, and decided to make it a quiet affair, without photo ops, in deference to the tragedy. Director Joss Whedon and actors Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans and Soo Hyun appeared wearing the yellow symbols during a press junket on Friday—ahead of the release of the film here on April 23, eight days ahead of North America.
Meanwhile The Truth Shall Not Sink With Sewol, a controversial documentary about the ferry accident, reopened in theaters for the occasion. The film espoused by Michael Moore, Bela Tarr and Joshua Oppenheimer is now showing in select theaters across the country as well as IPTV services.
