Spike Lee has released the official trailer for his upcoming Netflix feature Da 5 Bloods.
The movie — which stars Chadwick Boseman and Delroy Lindo, among others — follows African American veterans who return to Vietnam to find the remains of their squad leader (Boseman) and are confronted by the lingering effects of the war.
The men — Lindo, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis and Isiah Whitlock Jr. — are also lured by the promise of buried treasure and joined by Lindo’s character’s concerned son (Jonathan Majors).
The action-heavy trailer — full of glimpses of the men fighting in Vietnam, interspersed with what looks like documentary footage from the war and U.S. protests at the time — shows the four veterans returning to Vietnam and flashbacks in which Boseman’s squad leader suggests they bury a trunk full of gold bars, come back and retrieve the treasure.
“We’ve been dying for this country from the very get,” Boseman’s character says. “We give this gold to our people.”
The cast also features Melanie Thierry, Paul Walter Hauser, Jasper Pääkkönen, Johnny Trí Nguy?n, Van Veronica Ngo and Jean Reno, whose character has an ominous moment at the end of the trailer in which he says, “In my line of work, I have to be very careful. And that means knowing exactly who I am in business with.”
Lee directed, produced and co-wrote the film, sharing the writing credits with Danny Bilson, Paul DeMeo and Kevin Willmott. Other producers are Lloyd Levin, Beatriz Levin and Jon Kilik. The movie is executive produced by Jonathan Filley, Barry Levine and Mike Bundlie.
The film is set to hit Netflix on June 12.
