The two organizations are, starting Thursday, encouraging social media users to share that they will “#VoteBecause ____ depends on it.” The partners have also set up a website where voters can register to vote, confirm their registration, receive election updates and reminders and learn about volunteer opportunities. HBO Max has additionally harnessed some of its stars to share their reasons for voting in fall 2020 in a new PSA launched Thursday.
In the video, boldfaced names don masks that have their reasons for voting written on them: Matt Bomer’s mask, for instance, says “LGBTQ+ Rights” while Spike Lee’s says “Truth.” Chelsea Handler’s reads “Black Lives,” Natasha Rothwell’s three separate masks say “Equality,” “BLM” and “Choice,” Jay Ellis’ reads “Criminal Justice Reform” and Sarah Paulson’s says “Reproductive Justice.”
Samantha Bee, Robin Thede, Bill Maher, Bob the Drag Queen, Daphne Reid. Joseph Marcell, Kalen Allen, David Byrne and Henry Winkler also appear in the video. Winkler’s mask, shown at the end of the video, reads “Vote Early.”
As part of the campaign, HBO and HBO Max are making documentaries that cover social, racial, environmental and economic justice available to view for free to view through Nov. 8 (see the list of films, including After Truth and True Justice: Bryan Stevenson’s Fight for Equality, at this link). The platforms are also offering 10,000 free “voting kits” to participants in a first-come, first-serve basis that include voting information, stickers and a branded mask.
