Andy Samberg, who has created catchy yet silly songs such as the infamous “Dick in a Box” and “I’m on a Boat,” offered his musical talents for the 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday.
Samberg took the stage dressed as Judd Nelson in his most famous role as John Bender in 1985’s The Breakfast Club. Instead of crafting his own tune, Samberg stuck to his role and created a parody of The Breakfast Club‘s signature song, “Don’t You Forget About Me,” by Simple Minds.
“Don’t You Forget About Us” points to Hollywood stars such as Jennifer Lawrence and Mark Ruffalo, whose acting careers were kickstarted in the independent film industry but have since left for the more glamorous side of things in Hollywood blockbusters. Samberg called on the young indie actors in the crowd who are getting their careers started on the lower-key side of things, like Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chamelet, not to sell out.
“Jordan [Peele] and Kumal [Nanjiani], don’t go — don’t fall for the seductive dancing of the studios,” Samberg sang to the Get Out director and Big Sick writer-star, respectively. He then admitted he wanted them to stay on his side because he’s jealous of their success.
He ended his act by saying “tata” to Greta Gerwig and others in the industry, as he expects them to make the flip to Hollywood in the near future. He ended by posing with one fist in the air as Nelson ended his performance more than 30 years ago.
