Heidi Bivens, the styling vet and costume designer who gave Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers’ their sartorial sizzle, didn’t have to live vicariously through the film’s on-camera college-era debauchery. Because according to Bivens, she had some back-in-the-day depravity of her own.
“I remember going on spring break to Ocean City, Maryland, my sophomore year of college and seeing someone duct taped to a wall,” says the New York-based stylist, bringing to mind a similar mayhem-filled house party scene in Korine’s film.
After the shenanigans died down and she graduated from Hunter College, Bivens landed an internship at W and scored bylines at WWD before assisting Rachel Zoe and, ultimately, styling Michel Gondry-directed Kanye videos (2005’s Heard Em’ Say) and helping wardrobe David Lynch films (2006’s Inland Empire).
As Purple Magazine’s fashion editor and a Vogue contributor, middle-American college town mall fashion isn’t the first thing that usually lands on Bivens’ mood boards. But for Spring Breakers, that’s exactly where her mind went, as she stocked up on pieces from American Apparel, Hot Topic and Victoria’s Secret to outfit Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine’s anything-but-saccharin co-eds.
Even though she’s not planning a wristband-required booze cruise vacay anytime soon, we asked Bivens what she’d pack for a more grown-up spring getaway. And her wish list items — including pieces from her just-released Spring Breakers apparel and accessory collaboration with Opening Ceremony — are a bit more mellow than we only can assume they’d have been once upon a time.
“There was definitely underage drinking going on,” she says of her undergrad days. “But I wasn’t exactly a girl gone wild!”
