The current political climate in the U.S. may be getting increasingly heated, but it’s nothing compared to the atmosphere in the Galactic Republic, where sitting senators get assailed by attack ads based on their parentage and what they did during the war.
The official Star Wars channel released an ad called “Princess Leia: What Is She Trying to Hide?” — paid for by “Centerists for a Strong Republic,” apparently. The ad attacks Leia Organa not only for killing Jabba the Hutt in 1983’s Return of the Jedi but also for skipping Chewbacca during the medal ceremony at the end of the original Star Wars movie in 1977.
“Why doesn’t she think that Wookiees deserve medals?” it asks in an appropriately disapproving voice.
The attack ad is actually a promo for Claudia Gray’s recently released novel, Star Wars: Bloodline, which centers on Leia’s life after the events of Return of the Jedi — including the revelation that she is not actually the daughter of Bail Organa, as the galaxy had believed. Or, as the ad puts it, “Did you know that she isn’t even a real princess? Fact! Leia Organa is not of a royal bloodline!”
Lucasfilm revealed that the book contains “story ideas and elements” from Star Wars: Episode VIII director Rian Johnson ahead of that film’s 2017 release. Watch the ad below.
