For the first critic awards of the season, the red carpet looks were mellow compared to Hollywood standards. The 2011 New York Film Critics Circle Awards, which named The Artist best picture of 2011, welcomed a crop of casually, chic stars (although a few looks had some glittery, metallic punch) to Crimson in Manhattan’s flatiron district Jan. 9.
Angelina Jolie wore a Ferragamo blouse, pencil skirt and pumps while accompanying Brad Pitt—who took home the best actor title for Tree of Life and Moneyball. Pitt, who spoke quietly at the podium, accepted the award humbly: “It never crossed my mind that I’d be here,” he said, “I consider it a great privilege, I thank you for this, it means so much to me.”
The Help’s Viola Davis donned a shimmery, one-shoulder Ports 1961 dress and Sergio Rossi heels to the event, where her The Help co-star Jessica Chastain—who also shined in a metallic Lyn Devon number—won best supporting actress for Tree of Life, The Help and Take Shelter.
The Artist’s Berenice Bejo looked elegantly, laid-back in black satin pants and a tuxedo blazer, which she amped up with a metallic silver blouse.
Despite all of the gorgeous ladies winning looks, it was Drive’s Albert Brooks—who took home best supporting actor—who stole the show. He had the audience laughing with his self-deprecating remarks. “I’ve heard the expression, ‘critic-proof,'” he said. “I would be the opposite of critic-proof. I’m critic-prone.” The Mother writer/director/star continued, “every man needs some woman to tell a good thing to or it didn’t happen. For many years there was no one in my life so I kept knocking on my mother’s door.”
