Stephen Sondheim‘s partner might “crawl a mile” to see Lady Gaga perform, but the 84-year-old veteran composer isn’t so impressed.
Sondheim panned Gaga’s The Sound of Music medley performance at the Oscars, speaking to The Times in an article that ran last week. Though his 36-year-old partner, Jeff Romley, might be gaga for Gaga, Sondheim said he “does not share his taste for contemporary pop music.”

“On the Academy Awards, she was a travesty,” he told the British newspaper. “It was ridiculous, as it would be from any singer who treats that music in semi-operatic style. She had no relationship to what she was singing. What people liked was her versatility.”
Gaga’s performance was largely well received, perhaps most notably by the 1965 film’s star Julie Andrews. She told Billboard, “I’ve always been a fan, but she just knocked it out of the ballpark that night. I was thrilled by her and for her. I thought it was so lovely.”
