Sterling K. Brown took home the Golden Globe for best performance by an actor in a TV series, drama on Sunday night. With the nod, he became the first black actor in a TV series, drama winner.
The This Is Us star beat out Jason Bateman (Ozark), Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) and Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan).
Brown thanked his wife, kids and his cast upon accepting the award, as well as This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman, whom he thanked for “writing a role for a black man that could only be played by a black man.”
He added that with the role, he is “being seen and appreciated” for who he his, “and that makes it that much more difficult to dismiss me, or anybody who looks like me.”
It was his first Golden Globe win, and the first time he was nominated at the awards for This Is Us. Brown was previously nominated at last year’s Globes for The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.
Backstage, Brown said of his historic win, “To finally be the first of something is really interesting because I haven’t considered myself to be a trailblazer,” adding, “I feel a tremendous amount of pride and I look forward to seeing somebody else standing up here holding this trophy not 75 years from now.”
Seth Meyers hosted the 75th annual Globes ceremony, which took place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
