Steve McQueen’s hotly anticipated film Widows hasn’t yet had its world premiere, but the director already has awards heading in his direction.
BAFTA Los Angeles on Thursday announced that McQueen, who won an Oscar for 12 Years a Slave, would be this year’s recipient of the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for excellence in directing at the group’s 2018 Britannia Awards.
The award — whose previous recipients include Ava DuVernay, Sam Mendes, Danny Boyle, Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino and Kathryn Bigelow — is set to be presented to the Brit director by his Widows star Viola Davis.
Only McQueen’s fourth feature as director after 12 Years a Slave, Shame and Hunger, Widows will world premiere next month in Toronto, and also will open the London Film Festival in October.
The 2018 Britannia Awards are set to take place Oct. 26 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
