Bridge of Spies Still Rain - H 2015
Steven Spielberg’s Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies, starring Tom Hanks, will have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 25 through Oct. 1. The other world premieres in the fest’s main slate, which was announced Wednesday, will include Laura Israel’s documentary Don’t Blink: Robert Frank, a portrait of the celebrated photographer, as well as the previously announced The Walk, Robert Zemeckis’ film about high-wire artist Philippe Petit that opens the festival, and Don Cheadle’s Miles Ahead, his look at jazz great Miles Davis, which is serving as the closing night film.

The festival’s 26 features include a number of titles imported from this year’s Cannes Film Festival, including The Assassin, which earned Hou Hsiao-hsien that festival’s best director prize; Todd Haynes’ Carol, for which Rooney Mara was named best actress; Stephane Brize’s The Measure of a Man, starring best actor winner Vincent Lindon; Jury Prize winner The Lobster, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos; Un Certain Regard best director Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Journey to the Shore; and Un Certain Talent Prize winner Corneliu Porumboiu’s The Treasure.
Spielberg’s last film Lincoln played the festival in 2012. Other filmmakers returning to NYFF with new works include Michael Moore, presenting his new doc Where To Invade Next, following its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival; Hong Sangsoo, with Right Now, Wrong Then, about the relationship between a middle-aged art-film director and a fledgling artist; and French director Arnaud Desplechin, who is back with a story of young love My Golden Days, starring Mathieu Amalric and newcomers Quentin Dolmaire and Lou Roy-Lecollinet.
Comedy will move to the forefront in Rebecca Miller’s Maggie’s Plan, a New York romantic comedy starring Greta Gerwig, Ethan Hawke, Julianne Moore, Bill Hader and Maya Rudolph; Nanni Moretti’s Mia Madre, starring John Turturro; Michel Gondry’s Microbe & Gasoline, a new SFX comedy that follows two adolescent misfits who build a house on wheels and travel across France; and Corneliu Porumboiu’s The Treasure, a modern-day fable in which two men look for buried treasure in their backyard.
The fest also will mark the directorial debuts of both Cheadle with Miles Ahead and Thomas Bidegain, who is bringing Les Cowboys, in which a father searches for his missing daughter across a two-decade timespan — pre- to post-9/11 — from Europe to Afghanistan and back.
And, as previously announced, Danny Boyle‘s Jobs will screen as the fest’s centerpiece collection.
New York Film Festival director and selection committee chair Kent Jones said of the line-up: “I could talk about the geographical range of the films in the selection, the mix of artistic sensibilities from Hou Hsiao-hsien to Steven Spielberg to Chantal Akerman, the astonishments of Miguel Gomes’ three-part Arabian Nights or Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s heartbreaking Journey to the Shore or Michael Almereyda’s surprising Experimenter, the points in common among the various titles, but the only thing that really matters is how uniformly beautiful and vital each of these movies are. If I were 17 again and I looked at this lineup from far away, I’d be figuring out where I was going to stay in New York for two weeks this autumn.”
