Streetwear has certainly made its mark in the fashion world in recent years, with brands such as Vetements, Off-White and Kanye’s Yeezy vying for space on the runway show calendar and luxury store racks with old-school houses Dior, Chanel and Valentino; Louis Vuitton recently announcing a collaboration with cult skatewear line Supreme, and anyone and everyone making haute sneakers and sweatpants.
And now we’re starting to see the influence of the hypebeast/sneakerhead culture trickle down to the Cannes Film Festival, of all places, on the same red carpet that famously banned women not wearing high heel shoes.
The festival opened Wednesday with a fashion bang, and several of the looks were a surprising departure from the ladylike aesthetic we’re used to seeing at the festival in the South of France.
At the Ismael’s Ghost photocall, Marion Cotillard ditched Dior for a white jersey top and denim pants look by Antwerp-based Y/Project by Glenn Martens.
Meanwhile, Alba Rohrwacher wore a black-and-white look by Valentino that featured a black pleated skirt and edgy-looking strap details on the short-sleeve shirt bodice.
For opening night and the premiere of Ismael’s Ghosts, Robin Wright eschewed the typical ball-gown fluff in favor of a rock-goddess Saint Laurent mini dress. And Chinese pop star Chris Lee chose a Maison Margiela Artisinal deconstructed jacket and slouchy knee boots from the Spring 2017 collection. Here’s to seeing what’s ahead on the Croisette catwalk on day two.
