Turns out TV advertising’s biggest game is college basketball.
NCAA’s March Madness is the most lucrative postseason sports franchise for TV advertising revenue, beating out professional football, basketball and baseball championships, according to a trend study from Kantar Media and reported by NBC News.

Kantar’s data analysis reveals how the tournament has evolved over the past decade to become one of the largest and most valuable properties in all of television sports. Last year’s tournament totaled $1.15 billion in ad spending from 65 games, which trumped the 11-game NFL playoff total by over $50 million and the NBA postseason by $223 million. The report notes that the NFL postseason ad spending equaled $1.1 billion, while the NBA totaled $929 million and the MLB totaled $592 million.
The firm’s 2013 report noted that ad revenue in 2012 surpassed the $1 billion mark for the first time, dethroning pro football as the top postseason TV sports franchise, and also trumping the totals of Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, and the National Hockey League.
