A source pegged the price tag at $14 million.
Bell plays a woman looking to turn her life around by losing weight and training for a marathon. The movie made its world premiere in Sundance on Jan. 28. Michaela Watkins, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Lil Rel Howery, Micah Stock and Alice Lee round out the cast.
Brittany Runs a Marathon marks the third mega-deal on the ground in Sundance for Jen Salke and her Amazon team after landing U.S. rights for the Emma Thompson-Mindy Kaling comedy Late Night for $13 million and worldwide rights for the Adam Driver-led awards-season hopeful The Report for $14 million.
“Paul has crafted a hilariously rich story populated with vivid characters, anchored by the brilliant Jillian Bell, struggling with relatable issues many face on a daily basis,” Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke said. “Our goal at Amazon Studios, across both TV and film, is to be the best home for talent — in front and behind the camera. The three films we’ve picked up at Sundance speak to that ethos. It’s a mixture of new and established talent we hope to build a future with and continue to produce content for audiences around the world on Amazon Prime Video.”
Added Colaizzo: “I could feel Jennifer Salke’s passion for our movie and its characters as soon as she walked in the room. I’m so moved by the boundless love and support she and her colleagues have promised Brittany.”
The film was produced by Matthew Plouffe, Tobey Maguire and Margot Hand. Executive producers included Richard Weinberg, Bell and Colaizzo.
Plouffe, Maguire and Hand said they were won over by the Amazon’s team’s “attention to the film’s true spirit.”
Endeavor negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers. Colaizzo is repped by ICM Partners.
