Fox Searchlight is jumping in with Step, acquiring not only the worldwide distribution rights for the documentary, but also the remake rights.
Step zooms in on the first graduating class of Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women, which opened in 2009 with a mandate to send every student to college, despite the barriers that their home lives and community might present. The doc follows three irrepressible seniors and their “Lethal Ladies” step dance team as they navigate a nerve-wracking college application process and strive to elevate the creative outlet that keeps them united and fighting to reach their goals.
Step marks the feature directorial debut of Amanda Lipitz, the Tony Award-winning producer whose Broadway credits include Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Legally Blonde, The Performers, A View From the Bridge and The Humans. She also was executive producer and creator for MTV’s Legally Blonde the Musical: The Search for Elle Woods. Lipitz received a BFA in theatre from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and is now on the Board of Trustees at the university.
Lipitz and Steven Cantor produced Step, with executive producers Scott Rudin, Dan Cogan, Geralyn Dreyfous, Jenny Raskin, Ann Tisch, Micheal Flaherty, Regina Scully, Phil Glasser, Barbara Dobkin, Debbie McLeod and Jay Sears.
WME Global repped the film.
