The Orchard has acquired North American distribution rights to The Overnight, a comedy starring Taylor Schilling, Adam Scott, Jason Schwartzman and Judith Godreche.
The company is planning a traditional nationwide theatrical release later this year. What is being described as a strong P&A commitment is also part of the deal.
Schilling plays Emily, who with her husband Alex (Scott) and son RJ makes a move to Los Angeles. After meeting another family at a park, a subsequent playdate gradually evolves into something more.
Patrick Brice wrote and directed the feature. Naomi Scott produced the film with husband Adam Scott via their Gettin’ Rad Productions. Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass executive produced.
in a statement, Mark Duplass said, “Jay and I have made our careers by doing things our own way, and The Orchard is a group of young, smart pioneers who blew us away with their bold, passionate approach to taking this film into the world.”
The Orchard is relatively new on the theatrical distribution scene, having started out in music and videos. This deal is their most high-profile to date.
“We were obsessed with The Overnight from the minute we laid eyes on it,” said The Orchard’s senior vp film and TV Paul Davidson. “It’s a rare intelligent comedy backed up by an even rarer team of smart, passionate filmmakers.”
The deal was negotiated by Danielle DiGiacomo for The Orchard with ICM Partners and Submarine on behalf of the filmmakers in cooperation with WME Global.
