The Swiss watchmaker Girard-Perregaux has been quite busy in the entertainment world as of late. First, in June, it sponsored Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar’s New York premiere of his latest film I’m So Excited (Los Amantes Pasajeros), and then in mid-October, it presented the Lumiere Award to Quentin Tarantino during the Festival Lumiere, held every year in Lyon, France.
During both events, each director wore a Girard-Perregaux 1966 Annual Calendar and Equation of Time watch.
But these events were only a prelude to the storied brand’s latest news — and with any big news in the watchmaking world comes a brand-new timepiece.
Girard-Perregaux announced last year that it will become the exclusive timekeeper and a founding supporter of the Academy Museum. The new museum, located adjacent to LACMA and housed in the art deco masterwork Wilshire May Company building, will be designed by Renzo Piano and Zoltan Pali, with plans to feature extensive galleries, theaters, screening rooms and education centers that will pull from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science’s archives of more than 140,000 films, 10 million photographs, 42,000 original film posters, 10,000 production drawings, and numerous costumes, props and moviemaking equipment.
Girard-Perregaux, in honor of the partnership, will use classic images from the Academy’s photography collection as part of its advertising and marketing campaigns.
But the real news is the new addition to the Hawk Collection: the Chrono Hawk Hollywoodland. This all-new 44mm chronograph (retailing at $21,400) comes in a black ceramic case with a pink gold bezel. GP says the watch is a playful homage to Hollywood with an eye toward the cutting edge, based on the materials used in the timepieces’ creation.
The luminescent keys on the dialwork, as GP says, are “all the better to see in a dark cinema, if you must…and [the watch was] designed in tribute to Hollywood: a dream of a watch paying fealty to the industry that makes dreams spring vividly to life.”
The Chrono Hawk Hollywoodland is powered by a mechanical, self-winding GP03300 manufactured caliber with a visible oscillating weight by the sapphire that recalls the brand’s roots and identity codes.
“We are honored to be working alongside the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on this extraordinary venture,” said Michele Sofisti, CEO of the Sowind Group, which owns the Girard-Perregaux brand, in a statement. “We understand the importance of preserving the heritage and history of filmmaking which, like watchmaking, requires an immense amount of love, work and dedication.”
