AUSTIN — Neighbors — Universal’s upcoming raunchfest that pits Seth Rogen against Zac Efron as warring dad and the fratboy-next-door — debuted a nearly finished cut at South by Southwest on Saturday night, where the hard-R comedy’s balls-out humor killed in a packed Paramount Theatre. (More on the very funny film at THR’s rave review.)
The ribald mood spilled over to the post-screening Q&A, where Rogen and Efron were joined by director Nicholas Stoller, and fellow cast members Dave Franco, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Ike Barinholtz.
Also on hand were screenwriters Andrew Cohen and Brendan O’Brien, as well as Rogen’s frequent producing partner Evan Goldberg and producer James Weaver — the last of whom was introduced as the only one there to actually have been in a fraternity. (In fact, he was the only one who had attended college.)
“You make the funniest movies I’ve ever seen in my life. This is one of my favorite movies I’ve ever seen,” said one effusive fan to Rogen, who seemed genuinely touched by the appreciation. “So nice,” Rogen responded, adding, “I’m going to fuck the shit out of that guy the second this is over.”

Asked for highlights of the shoot, Franco offered this recollection of a scene in which his character has sex with a sorority girl, requiring some nudity: “My favorite interaction with the director Nick Stoller was during my awkward sex scene. I did the first couple takes and Nick ran upstairs and he leans in and he’s like, ‘Hey Dave, just, uh, like, more jackrabbit.”
Added Rogen: “When I first saw that I was like, ‘Is that how I’m supposed to be fucking? I’m doing it so slow.”
Neighbors opens in theaters on May 9, 2014.
