One of the more intriguing documentaries in competition at SXSW this year is Print the Legend, a new film that tracks the rise of the 3D printer.
Legend plunges us inside the world of Brooklyn-based MakerBot Industries, where CEO Bre Pettis, positioned here as the budding Steve Jobs of the still-young industry, looks a little stressed out as he attends to ribbon-cuttings and motivational speeches before a growing army of employees. Other companies in the same competing space are profiled in the film as well.
Will affordable 3D printing, as endorsed by President Obama in last year’s State of the Union address, have “the potential to revolutionize the way we make everything?” It’s probably too soon to tell — but the film uses that to its advantage, weaving a tale of competing egos and startup woes in the race to a Jetsons-esque tomorrow where you can make anything with the push of a button.
Print the Legend premieres at SXSW on Sunday, March 9 at 1:30 p.m at the Stateside Theater.
