Taye Diggs is making his return to Broadway this summer in the title role of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the 2014 Tony Award-winning Best Musical Revival.
Diggs will play Hedwig, the transgender East German rocker with a botched sex change, for a limited 12-week engagement beginning Wednesday, July 22, at the Belasco Theatre.
Diggs‘ last stint on a New York stage was in 2005 with the off-Broadway revival of A Soldier’s Play. He made his Broadway debut in a 1994 production of Carousel, and soon after was featured in the original cast of the landmark musical Rent.
He is currently in production on the second season of Steven Bochco’s crime drama Murder in the First, which premieres Monday, June 8, on TNT.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is written by John Cameron Mitchell, with music and lyrics by Stephen Trask. The production is directed by Michael Mayer and also stars Rebecca Naomi Jones as Yitzhak.
Neil Patrick Harris originated the role in the Broadway revival and won a Tony for lead actor in a musical. Limited-run appearances in the role have since been made by Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall and Mitchell, who made a triumphant return to the part he created earlier this year, Darren Criss of Glee is currently appearing in the role through July 19.
Diggs will headline the production through Oct. 11.
