Taylor Swift capped off a successful night at the 2015 MTV VMAs by taking home the top prize, earning her first Video of the Year award for “Bad Blood” with Kendrick Lamar.
Despite facing competition from Beyonce‘s “7/11,” Ed Sheeran‘s “Thinking Out Loud,” Lamar’s “Alright” and Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars‘ “Uptown Funk,” the futuristic video for the duo’s Hot 100 chart-topping collaboration was the clear-cut favorite from the start.
After Ice Cube and O’Shea Jackson Jr. presented the MTV Award, Swift ascended the stage with her “Bad Blood” squad to deliver a short but sweet victory speech that commenced with respects paid to Straight Outta Compton and the absent Lamar.

“This was such a collaborative effort,” she continued. “These women helped create their parts, write their roles and decide what they wanted to be. Two of these women I’ve named cats after. For the fans to give us this bonding experience we’ll have forever — thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Acknowledging widespread speculation over the video’s meaning, Swift deferred explaining — instead using her speech as an opportunity to make a parting point about the country’s present progressive climate.
“I’m just happy in 2015 to live in a world where boys can play princesses and girls can play soldiers,” she finished to a standing ovation.
