Telemundo Media has forged an overall exclusive content agreement with Chilean broadcaster Television Nacional de Chile that will give Telemundo exclusive U.S., Puerto Rico and Mexico rights for TVN’s novela script library.
“The expansion of our strategic alliance with TVN is key to Telemundo Media, as it provides an excellent source of original and innovative stories for our catalog and strengthens the network’s original programming in the United States,” Telemundo Internacional president Marcos Santana said in a statement. “This agreement is in line with our programming strategy of offering original productions based on a unique type of storytelling.”
The new agreement lets Telemundo Media access TVN’s telenovela scripts for development by Telemundo Studios in Mexico or the U.S. Original content has been a priority for the NBCUniversal-owned Spanish-language network, which increasingly has produced its own top primetime telenovelas including the 2010 hit La Reina del Sur. The company already also produced several original novelas based on adaptations of TVN scripts including Alguien Te Mira and Donde Esta Elisa? and La Casa de al Lado.
Telemundo Media also has renewed its global representation deal with TVN for five years. Telemundo International has represented TVN Chile exclusively in the international market since 2006, having sold TVN’s original productions and formats such as El Laberinto de Alicia and Los Hijos del Monte around the world. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Added Mauro Valdes, executive director of TVN: “We are delighted by Telemundo’s interest in our original telenovela scripts, which shows great confidence in the quality of our productions. This new agreement, together with the renewal of the distribution agreement, allows us to continue to strengthen our brand around the world through our stories and content. TVN is, by far, the largest producer of telenovelas in Chile and one of the largest in Latin America, with stories able to captivate not only the Chilean audience but also viewers from different cultures. Our alliance with Telemundo has been essential to our efforts to position TVN Chile outside of our country.”
TVN is Chile’s only public television network. The company owns a news cable network, an international cable channel and two websites.
