The Hollywood Reporter announced Thursday that New York bureau chief and business editor Georg Szalai has been named international business editor, further expanding the magazine’s coverage of the global entertainment market.
Szalai will be based in London beginning April 10 and will continue to cover the intersection of finance and entertainment while leading THR’s European editors and correspondents and attending film markets and industry conferences. He joins senior staff members Stuart Kemp in London and Scott Roxborough in Cologne, along with international film editor Deborah Young in Rome.
“I’m thrilled to take on a new role at THR as international business editor,” says Szalai. “With entertainment companies continuing to look for growth opportunities in foreign markets, I’m excited to play a role in expanding our coverage around the world.”
“Georg is a first-rate business reporter whose breadth of knowledge and relationships on Wall Street remain an asset,” says THR editorial director Janice Min. “In his new role, he’ll expand The Reporter‘s reach as the global market becomes increasingly important to Hollywood and the entertainment industry overall.”
Szalai joined THR in 2001 as a business reporter and was named business editor in 2003 and New York bureau chief in 2005. Since THR‘s revamp in 2010, he has broken stories such as the cord-cutting debate, social-gaming firm Zynga’s integration with entertainment companies and the profitability of premium TV’s Epix. He also has interviewed industry leaders, including Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman, and was the first to talk to Randy Falco after he was appointed Univision Communications CEO. Szalai also launched THR‘s yearly look at the profitability of entertainment conglomerates’ studio units and has covered continuing stories as News Corp.’s phone-hacking scandal and Hollywood’s deals with digital distributors like Netflix.
Additionally, Szalai has reported on AFM in Santa Monica, the Reykjavik International Film Festival in Iceland and will next attend Cannes, where he will join production of THR‘s festival dailies for the first time in May.
Szalai worked at the financial wire service Bridge News before joining THR.
His appointment comes as THR’s website notched its biggest month of traffic ever, with 5 million uniques, and tripled international visits year-over-year, according to ComScore. The commitment to international entertainment news continues as The Hollywood Reporter Russia launches as a print monthly in April and the team of editors and writers dedicated to producing market-specific dailies for Berlin, Cannes, Toronto, Filmart, Busan and AFM is growing.
The Cannes dailies, to be published for eight days beginning May 16, will mark THR’s most expanded coverage ever, including more reviews, news and deals, an extension of the magazine’s trademark roundtables and the return of in-depth party coverage. The dailies and additional wall-to-wall coverage, including video, also will be available at THR.com.
