A third suspicious package addressed to CNN has been found and removed from a postal facility in Atlanta, Georgia, where the cable network is based.
“This morning, another suspicious packaged addressed to CNN was intercepted at an Atlanta post office,” CNN president Jeff Zucker wrote in a memo to staffers on Monday morning. “There is no imminent danger to the CNN Center.”
Zucker explained how enhanced security procedures protected the network. “All mail, at all CNN domestic bureaus, is being screened at off-site facilities as of last Wednesday, so this package would NOT have come directly to the CNN Center, even if it hadn’t been intercepted first,” he said. “Our screening process is working and we will keep you updated as we learn more.”
Last Wednesday, CNN’s Time Warner Center office in New York was evacuated after a bomb was found in the building’s mail room, addressed to CNN guest John Brennan.
A second bomb addressed to CNN, this time to James Clapper, was intercepted at a New York City postal facility last Friday.
The third package was not addressed to anyone specific, just to the CNN Center building in downtown Atlanta.
In an end-of-the-week memo on Friday afternoon, obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Zucker re-stated his focus on the security of CNN employees.
“Security remains our number one priority,” he said. “I have complete confidence in our experts that make up to the moment decisions about security in all of our locations, and I have been in constant contact with them. We are focused on every location, every minute of the day, seven days a week. And that will continue.”
