The third Hobbit film will be getting a new title.
Peter Jackson announced on his Facebook page on Thursday a new title for The Hobbit: There and Back Again.
“When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title,” Jackson wrote. “We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate. And so: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies it is.”
The possibility of a change in title was first raised last week when fan site TheOneRing.net noted that New Line had registered the title The Hobbit: Into the Fire. That same report noted that the Battle of the Five Armies subtitle had previously been registered at the same time as the second installment’s The Desolation of Smaug.

The director explained that the originally announced title of the third installment has not been entirely discarded. “As Professor Tolkien intended, ‘There and Back Again’ encompasses Bilbo’s entire adventure, so don’t be surprised if you see it used on a future box set of all three movies,” he wrote.
In the same Facebook post, Jackson revealed that he was “happily editing” the third movie in the series along with an extended cut of The Desolation of Smaug with “over 25 mins of new scenes, all scored with original music composed by Howard Shore.” Teasing that fans can “expect to see and hear much about The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in the coming months,” he finished the post by promising, “it’ll be a fun year!”
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is scheduled for a December 17, 2014, release.
