Tim Blake Nelson will star in The True Don Quixote, a modern day reimagining of Miguel de Cervantes’ classic story.
Nelson will star as a man who is inspired by the fictional Quixote, who spent too much time with romance stories and consequently believes he is a knight. Spider-Man: Homecoming newcomer Jacob Batalon is set to play the movie’s Quixote sidekick Sancho Panza.
Chris Poche (Over the Hedge) wrote and will helm the project, which has begun principal photography in New Orleans.
Charterhouse Films’ Trey Burvant and Neutral Ground Films’ Jason Waggenspack will produce, with Karey Kirkpatrick, Rick French, Sal Scaccia, Josh Mayer, Susan Brennan and Sidney D. Torres III executive producing. Beth Burvant will act as co-producer.
Cervantes’ Spanish-language epic has proven a hot property as of late, 400 years after its first publication. Disney is developing an adaptation, with Gordon Gray and Billy Ray attached to produce. Terry Gilliam’s Quixote-inspired film, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, is finally heading into producing after nearly two decades of stops and starts.
Nelson, who was recently seen in Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and indie drama Colossal, is set for Anthony Mandler’s Monster and James Franco’s The Long Home. He is repped by UTA, Gateway and Bloom Hergott.
Batalon, who is set for Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man sequel, is repped by Paradigm.
