Tom Brady has called a Trump audible.
The New England Patriots quarterback said Monday that he didn’t actually endorse GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump in his White House bid.
Previously, the four-time Super Bowl champion made headlines when it was reported he had a “Make America Great” hat in his locker; that of course being Trump’s campaign slogan. In addition, Brady said a Trump presidency “would be great. There would be a putting green on the White House lawn, I can tell you that.”
But on Monday, it was a different tune.
While giving a radio interview on Boston’s Dennis & Callahan Show, Brady said his alleged endorsement was an “offhand comment” that was overanalyzed.
“And I understand why people do run with it because you get the clicks and that type of stuff,” said Brady. “It’s just people doing their job. A comment like that, I try to have fun with certain things.”
Brady said he tries to choose his words carefully and not create headlines that take attention away from his team.
“When you’re speaking publicly, you have a lot of people listening, and I think it’s probably in everyone’s best interest, in today’s day and age, to say as little as possible,” he said.
In his opinion, Brady said, the election is too far out for him to be deciding on a candidate.
“One way or another, it’s so far away from when the election will be,” said Brady. “Whatever I vote is going to be my own personal choice based on how I feel. I don’t even know what the issues are. I haven’t paid attention to politics in a long time. It’s actually not something that I really even enjoy. It’s way off my radar.”
As for Trump, Brady said he really is a fan of the billionaire business mogul.
“I mean, look, I’ve known him for a long time,” said Brady. “He’s been a fun guy that I’ve had a lot of time around.”
