The Hollywood Reporter‘s Kirk Honeycutt wrote that Hardy’s character is “surly and brooding about wrongs, real and imagined” and the British actor’s “thickly muscled, highly tattooed ex-soldier is a ticking bomb.” But Hardy, who, arguably broke through in last year’s Inception has several projects on his slate.
British drama Tinker, Tailer, Soldier, Spy, based on the book by John le Carre, revolves around George Smiley (Gary Oldman), who comes out of retirement to carry on with another mission. Set in the 1970s, Hardy plays Ricki Tarr, a British operative acquaintance of George, who is described as an “ordinary, anti-James Bond” type. The film, which debuted at the Venice Film Festival, is set to be released Nov. 18.
The Wettest County in the World, directed by John Hillcoat, is a crime drama that is set in the Depression era that revolves around a family of bootleggers living in the South. Written by Nick Cave, Hardy co-stars with Shia LaBeouf, Jason Clarke, Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska and Jessica Chastain. Hardy plays Forrest Bondurant, one of three brothers (LaBeouf and Clarke play the others).
Hardy next stars in This Means War with Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine. Hardy and Pine play two CIA operatives who end up falling in love with the same woman, and as they vie for her affections, wage an epic battle.
The actor reunites with Inception filmmaker Christopher Nolan for the third Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, as the villainous Bane. No real developments with the story — and specifically in relation to his character — have come out, though the cast and crew recently finished filming in Pittsburgh. The Dark Knight Rises, out July 20, 2012, is a reunion of sorts for several of its actors. Hardy’s co-stars in Inception, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard also have roles in the movie.
